Drives

Humans are remarkable animals. Although many of us make great efforts to adopt a straightforward, consistent and balanced approach we are all brimming with contradictions. Everyone is simultaneously egoistic and social, wishes for security and adventure, and to accept and understand. Our everyday behavior, moral convictions, emotional life and perceptions develop from the continual tensions caused by our conflicting drives.

But how does this mechanism actually work? Numerous experts have focused on this issue, and there is certainly no lack of concepts, ranging from simple distinctions between heart and soul to models that differentiate between more than thirty layers of awareness. However, some elements are common to almost every concept, sometimes in dichotomies such as introvert / extrovert, sometimes in trichotomies such as heart, soul and gut – and sometimes also in extremely complex relationships. Some concepts are simplistic but nevertheless practicable; others are unmanageable as a result of their complexity.

We are of the opinion that these models must offer a practical insight – but without excessive oversimplification. We met these conflicting requirements by developing Management Drives. After making measurements of many tens of thousands of individuals, both in the Netherlands and elsewhere, we developed a model based on six drives that can vary both in sequence and in intensity. Moreover we made a distinction between the favorable and unfavorable elements of drives. The six drives in this model enable us to arrive at millions of different personality profiles. You will be surprised at the depth and refinement that can be achieved with the combination of these drives.

We use colors to identify the six specific drives.

Most individuals possess all six drives. The sequence and combinations of these drives give us an insight into how people think, feel and act. Individuals who, for example, exhibit drives which begin with Orange and Yellow are results-oriented (Orange) and perceive seeking the most sophisticated idea (Yellow) to achieve the required result as a self-explanatory approach. All sequences are feasible and encountered in practice.
